Note: This story includes a song from my childhood. It is very hard to do justice to a song in a book – words can’t give you the tone or rhythm. Based on my editor’s recommendation, the song was drastically condensed to just a few lines and references to what the other verses contained. Since the song, Paper & Pen (as I knew it growing up), is a very big memory for me, I wanted to share the full lyrics with anyone who might be interested. Again, these words are the way my parents used to sing it … and often, the verses were switched around (like the brown cow might come before the green dress!). The point is, no matter what order or choice of words my father sang, the song itself brings back the joy of family gatherings. And for those of you who would like to hear the rhythm … there is an audio player clip on the side bar. It’s not very good sound quality, and you have to remember that all instruments were being played by various family members during a 1984 Christmas gathering (definitely not done by professionals). This is the only recording I have of my parents singing this song. I am honored to be able to share it with you…and maybe now you can incorporate the beat of the song as you read that chapter of the book – having fun and adding laughter to your own memories!
